Exercising with the Nike+ ipod Sports Kit

I got my new pouch, which I’d ordered on ebay, for the nike+ ipod sensor and it works like a treat. So today I tested it out and went for 10km run up and down some pretty grueling hills, one of my favourite fat burning exercises.

After attaching the pouch to my shoe laces (which saved me buying Nike shoes!), I then started the nike+ ipod app on my new 3GS iphone.

There are various workouts you can choose from including Distance, Time, Calorie and Basic. Distance has the choice of 3k, 5k, 10k, 2 mile, 5 mile, 10 mile, half marathon and full marathon workouts or you can choose custom to set your own distance.

If you choose the Time workout, you have an option of selecting 20, 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes and again you can set your own custom time. The Calorie workout offers a choice of 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700 or 800 calories plus a custom option. Basic is when you opt out of any of the predetermined workouts and just go with the flow.

On this particular occasion I chose Distance then the 10k workout. After choosing your workout, you then have a choice of selecting a playlist from your ipod, shuffle songs or none. As I went running with my husband, I chose none.

I then got a message, asking me to walk around to activate the sensor which it picked up pretty much straight away. A pleasant voice greeted me saying ‘Beginning Workout’ so off we went.

A couple of added options you have during your workout with the nike+ ipod sports kit, are if you have selected a particular playlist to listen to while working out, you can change this. Another is you can pause the workout at any time should you need to.

Once we’d finished our run, I tapped End Workout on the iphone screen. The same pleasant voice then gave me a run down of total distance, the time it took, the pace per kilometer and finally the total calories I burnt.

Then what I love, is that once I sync my iphone to my laptop all of this information is uploaded to the Nike running website. Here I have set my goals for the next 4 weeks and it tells me what I have achieved so far and what I still need to do.

I find this type of tracking very useful because now I’ve set these goals, I feel I have to achieve it. What a fantastic way to keep motivated and a great way to keep on top of your fat burning exercises.

Good info, thanks for sharing. I tried to change the music in my workout but can’t see where to do this. Can you help please?

    Hi Dani

You need to pause your workout and the “Power song” button will change to “Change music”. Once you’ve selected a new playlist from itunes you need to then press play again in the Nike workout app to restart your workout session.
