The Zone diet consists of high protein and low carbohydrates. Similar to the Atkins diet, the Zone diet was created in 2002 by Dr Barry Sears and studies show it can produce weight loss at reasonable rates.
The Zone diet nutrition program recommends eating in ‘zones’ which are based on the following:
- 40% complex carbohydrates
- 30% lean protein
- 30% mono-unsaturated fat
It also recommends eating more omega-3 fatty acids as well as exercising at least 30 minutes a day, six days a week. Hormonal balance is key to this diet and finding the correct balance between insulin and glucagon is achieved with the 40/30/30 ratio. Eating plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts are a must on this diet, as is drinking at least 8 glasses of water every day. Processed foods and too much salt are to be avoided.
Along with weight loss, other benefits of the Zone diet are increased energy levels, better mental clarity, and overall wellness. It is extremely popular with elite athletes and celebrities such as Jennifer Anniston and Cindy Crawford.
As with any diet or new eating plan, consult with your health professional before making any radical changes to your food intake.
