Circuit training is extremely effective for all over body toning exercises. It is also a good alternative when you are pushed for time. Unlike traditional weight training, it can improve your fitness levels as well as building muscle tone. Circuit training, therefore is a great fat burning activity.
A typical circuit training routine would include 8-10 different stations, involving free weights, mat exercises and machines. Each station would work on a different part of the body and you would often use lighter weights. The various exercises can be performed for a specific number of repetitions, for example, 12-15, or for a specific amount of time such as 1 or 2 minutes per exercise. Resting time in between the exercises is kept to a minimum, usually no more than 15-20 seconds.
The circuit can be repeated two to three times through, depending on your time constraints. Generally twice is sufficient. Other benefits of these all over body toning exercises is you are combining a workout for both muscular endurance and muscle building. There is also some cardiovascular fitness involved as you would generally keep your heart rate fairly high throughout the entire circuit, so long as your rest times are minimal.
Once you get used to this type of routine, it’s a good idea to increase the weights lifted as well as the number of exercises performed at each station. You need to keep your body challenged for best results.
Circuit training can be done individually or with a group in a class-type setting where each person works on a different station and you all move around the room together.
